What is a no-hub coupling and why does it leak?

A no-hub coupling is the fitting used to join two pieces of hubless cast iron drain pipe. It is a rubber sleeve held over the joint by a stainless steel shield and torque bands. The rubber makes the seal; the bands hold the clamping force. Leaks happen when that clamping force is not even — if one band is snugged tighter than the other, even by a sixteenth of an inch, the sleeve sits crooked on the pipe and water finds its way around the seal. The other common failures are a rubber sleeve cut by a sharp cast iron edge, pipe movement from missing or loose support, and bands that simply loosen over the years.

Can a leaking cast iron joint be repaired, or does the pipe need to be replaced?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the condition of the pipe itself, not just the joint. If the cast iron is sound and only the coupling has failed, replacing the coupling and torquing the new bands evenly is a genuine repair — often an hour of work. If the pipe is scaled, cracked, or corroded thin, a new coupling will only move the leak to the next weak point, and replacing the section or the stack is the honest answer. How do I know if my cast iron drain pipe is leaking?

The usual signs are a damp or stained basement ceiling under a bathroom, rust-colored streaks or crusting at a pipe joint, a sewer-gas smell that comes and goes, water pooling at the base of a stack, or flaking and blistering paint on a wall the pipe runs behind. Drain leaks are often intermittent because they only drip when something upstairs is running, which is why they get missed for months. How long does cast iron drain pipe last?

Cast iron drain, waste, and vent pipe generally lasts 50 to 100 years, and most of Bergen County’s pre-1980 housing stock still has it. It fails from the inside out: waste and moisture corrode the bottom of horizontal runs until the wall thins and channels through. That is why a building can have joints and couplings that are fine while a run of pipe a few feet away is close to the end of its life — and why a camera inspection is worth doing before committing to a repair.

Always. After a coupling is replaced and the bands are torqued evenly, we run water through the line for several minutes and check the joint from every side for drips or accumulation — the same water test you see at the end of our video. A cast iron joint that is only checked for a few seconds can pass and still leak once the line sees real flow, so we leave it running long enough to be sure.
