Question 1

What is a drain cleanout and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

A cleanout is a capped, threaded access point tied into your drain or sewer line. It lets a plumber put a cable machine or hydro-jetter straight into the pipe to clear a clog — without having to pull a toilet, open a trap, or dig. If your home has no cleanout, every clog becomes a bigger, messier, more expensive job than it needs to be. Adding one is a small investment that pays off the very next time the line backs up.

Question 2

My house has no cleanout — can you add one?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is common in older Bergen County homes that were built without an accessible cleanout. We tie a cleanout fitting into the drain line at a practical spot — near where the main leaves the house, at the base of a stack, or on the branch that keeps clogging — so future service is fast. We size and place it to give the best straight-line access to the parts of the system that actually give trouble.

Question 3

Will installing a cleanout actually fix my clog?

Accepted Answer

Installing the cleanout is often done as part of clearing the clog — it gives us the access to reach and remove the blockage properly, and then it stays in place for next time. If the clog is caused by something deeper, like root intrusion or a broken pipe, the cleanout is also the access point we use for a sewer camera inspection to see exactly what is going on before recommending anything further.

Question 4

Where does the cleanout get installed?

Accepted Answer

It goes wherever it gives the most useful access with the least disruption — commonly just inside the foundation where the main drain exits, at the bottom of a vertical stack, or on a specific branch line that repeatedly clogs. We pick the location based on your home's layout and where the line actually needs to be serviced, and we explain the plan before we cut anything.

Question 5

How often should a drain line be cleaned once there is a cleanout?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the line. A kitchen branch that catches grease, or a main line with older pipe or nearby trees, may benefit from periodic preventive cleaning. Once a cleanout is in place, that maintenance is quick and inexpensive — a routine snaking or jetting rather than a dismantling job. We can advise a sensible interval based on what we find in your line.
