Question 1

How do I know if my AC needs repair or replacement?

Accepted Answer

If your system is under 10 years old and the repair cost is reasonable for the age of the unit, repair is usually the right call. If the system is over 15 years old, uses R-22 refrigerant, needs frequent repairs, or cannot keep your home comfortable, replacement may be more cost-effective. We assess your system and give you an honest recommendation -- we would rather tell you the truth than sell you a repair that will not last.

Question 2

What happens during an AC service call?

Accepted Answer

Our technician arrives, listens to what you are experiencing, and performs a diagnostic inspection of your system. This includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, testing the thermostat, examining the condenser and evaporator coils, and checking airflow. Once we identify the problem, we explain what needs to be done and provide pricing before starting any repair work.

Question 3

How long does an AC repair take?

Accepted Answer

Most AC repairs are completed the same day, typically within one to three hours. Straightforward repairs like capacitor or contactor replacement take about an hour. More involved work like refrigerant leak repair, compressor replacement, or coil replacement may take longer. We give you an estimated timeframe before we start.

Question 4

Do you repair all brands of air conditioners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As a licensed NJ HVAC contractor, our technicians are trained to diagnose and repair central air conditioners, ductless mini-splits, and heat pumps from all major manufacturers. We are not limited to a single brand.

Question 5

Do you offer emergency AC repair?

Accepted Answer

Yes. H. Hofmeister responds to AC emergencies including total system failures during heat waves, refrigerant leaks, and electrical problems. We are available nights, weekends, and holidays. Call (201) 666-1118 any time for emergency AC service.

Question 6

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Accepted Answer

An AC that runs but does not cool usually has one of a few common issues: low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty or frozen evaporator coil restricting airflow, a failing compressor, or a malfunctioning thermostat. The outdoor condenser unit could also be blocked by debris or have a failed fan motor. Our diagnostic service identifies the exact cause so we can fix it properly.

Question 7

How much does AC repair cost?

Accepted Answer

AC repair costs depend on the problem. Diagnostics typically run $175 to $350. Common repairs like capacitor or contactor replacement are on the lower end, while compressor replacement or refrigerant leak repair costs more. We provide exact pricing after diagnosis and before starting any work. See our pricing chart on this page for typical ranges.
